What is small text?

Small text is not a shrunken font but a set of special Unicode characters —small caps, superscripts and subscripts— that look small and that you can copy and paste anywhere.

Because they are characters and not a style, they work even where you cannot change the typeface: an Instagram bio, a username, a comment or a message. The text pastes as text, not as an image, so it looks the same on almost any device.

This tool gives you the three variants at once and you pick the one that fits: small caps for aesthetics, superscript for exponents and subscript for formulas.

The three types: small caps, superscript and subscript

Small caps (sᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘs)

These are small-sized capital letters. They are used mostly for aesthetics, in bios and titles, to give an elegant look without shouting in full caps.

Superscript (ˣ²)

The text is raised. It works for math exponents, ordinals (1ˢᵗ, 2ⁿᵈ), footnotes and trademarks. Digits exist in full, so exponents look perfect.

Subscript (ₕ₂ₒ)

The text is lowered. It is the format of chemical formulas: H₂O, CO₂, C₆H₁₂O₆. The numbers are complete; some letters do not exist in Unicode (see below).

Chemistry and math notation

Where small text truly shines is scientific notation. Since digits exist in full in superscript and subscript, you can write real formulas that paste into any document, chat or social network:

  • Chemistry (subscript): H₂O, CO₂, C₆H₁₂O₆, O₂, CH₄. Type the formula with the numbers and apply subscript.
  • Exponents (superscript): x², a³, 10⁶, eⁿ, m², km².
  • Ordinals (superscript): 1ˢᵗ, 2ⁿᵈ, 3ʳᵈ, 4ᵗʰ.

Compatibility and missing letters

Let us be honest about something almost no tool explains: Unicode does not include every letter in every variant. Superscript has no reliable “q”, and subscript only exists for 17 lowercase letters: a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v, x. Uppercase subscript does not exist.

When a letter has no small version, we leave it as is and warn you with a note, instead of swapping in a different-size character that would break the uniformity. We also convert uppercase to lowercase in superscript and subscript, because raised capitals render badly on many phones.

Accents, ñ and ç are converted to their base letter (a, n, c) so text in Spanish and Portuguese does not break.

Why does the text look so small?
