What is strikethrough text and how does it work?

Strikethrough text is normal text with the Unicode combining character U+0336 added after every letter: that character draws a horizontal line on top, so the word reads as c̶r̶o̶s̶s̶e̶d̶ o̶u̶t̶ while remaining real text.

Because it is neither an image nor a special format tied to one app, you can cross out text here and paste it anywhere: an Instagram bio, a TikTok comment, a Facebook post or a Telegram message. The struck-through letters travel with the text when you copy it, which is why they survive even in apps that offer no strikethrough button at all.

Crossing out text on each platform

WhatsApp has its own shortcut: type a tilde before and after the word, ~text~, and the app will cross it out when the message is sent. It is the cleanest option inside chats, but it only works there: in your name, in statuses or outside WhatsApp you need the Unicode strikethrough from this generator.

Instagram and TikTok

Neither offers text formatting, so Unicode is the only way: generate the strikethrough here and paste it into your bio, captions, comments or the text of your Reels and videos. It looks the same on Android, iPhone and the web.

Facebook

Regular Facebook posts and comments have no strikethrough button either. Unicode strikethrough works without issues on your timeline, in groups and in Messenger.

Discord and Markdown

Does strikethrough text work in every app?

Unicode strikethrough works in the vast majority: Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, Telegram and WhatsApp too. Because they are real text characters, the effect survives copy and paste. Only some very old systems may render the stroke misaligned.

What is the difference between Unicode strikethrough and the WhatsApp one?

Unicode strikethrough appends a combining character to every letter and looks crossed out in any app. The WhatsApp ~text~ format is a shortcut that only that app converts when the message is sent: outside WhatsApp you will see the tildes as-is.

Why does the strikethrough sometimes look broken or misaligned?

The line is drawn with a combining character overlaid on each letter, and every font positions it slightly differently. On most modern phones it looks like a continuous line; older fonts without support may show it broken.

Does strikethrough text affect SEO or accessibility?
