What is a number to words converter?
A number to words converter is a tool that turns a numeric figure into its full written form. Converting numbers to words is required on many documents: the written amount carries legal weight and prevents fraud.
This tool automates that process. You type the number, choose a currency and get the text instantly, with no extra button to press. Unlike doing it by hand, converting numbers to words this way eliminates errors in agreement, hyphenation and plurals.
All the calculation happens in your browser, so the figures are never sent to a server. It is the fastest, safest way to spell out numbers for any text document.
Why spell out numbers in words?
Converting numbers to words is a common requirement in finance, law and education. These are the most frequent use cases.
Bank checks
Checks require the amount written in words next to the figure. A number to words converter prevents mistakes that would void the payment.
Invoices and contracts
On invoices and contracts, the amount in words takes legal priority over the figure. Converting numbers to words keeps both consistent.
Legal documents
Deeds, promissory notes and notarial records need amounts spelled out, often in uppercase. This tool handles it in one click.
Education
Students and teachers use the converter to learn and check how numbers are correctly written in words.

Rules for writing numbers in words
Writing numbers in words correctly follows a few English conventions. The converter applies them automatically.
Hyphenated compound numbers
Numbers from 21 to 99 that are not multiples of ten are hyphenated: "twenty-one", "ninety-eight". This applies inside larger numbers too, as in "one hundred forty-three".
Hundred, thousand and beyond
Each group of three digits is read with its scale word: thousand, million, billion, trillion. "Hundred" never takes a plural — it stays "two hundred", not "two hundreds".
Decimals and cents
With a currency, the first two decimals are read as cents: "and fifty cents". Without a currency, decimals are read digit by digit after the word "point".
Cents vs pence
The decimal word changes with the currency. This table summarizes the common usage.
| Region | Currency | Decimals |
|---|---|---|
| United States, Canada | Dollar | cents |
| Eurozone | Euro | cents |
| United Kingdom | Pound | pence |
