What is a number to words converter?

A number to words converter is a tool that turns a numeric figure into its full written form. Converting numbers to words is required on many documents: the written amount carries legal weight and prevents fraud.

This tool automates that process. You type the number, choose a currency and get the text instantly, with no extra button to press. Unlike doing it by hand, converting numbers to words this way eliminates errors in agreement, hyphenation and plurals.

All the calculation happens in your browser, so the figures are never sent to a server. It is the fastest, safest way to spell out numbers for any text document.

Why spell out numbers in words?

Converting numbers to words is a common requirement in finance, law and education. These are the most frequent use cases.

🏦

Bank checks

Checks require the amount written in words next to the figure. A number to words converter prevents mistakes that would void the payment.

💼

Invoices and contracts

On invoices and contracts, the amount in words takes legal priority over the figure. Converting numbers to words keeps both consistent.

⚖️

Legal documents

Deeds, promissory notes and notarial records need amounts spelled out, often in uppercase. This tool handles it in one click.

🎓

Education

Students and teachers use the converter to learn and check how numbers are correctly written in words.

Rules for writing numbers in words

Writing numbers in words correctly follows a few English conventions. The converter applies them automatically.

Hyphenated compound numbers

Numbers from 21 to 99 that are not multiples of ten are hyphenated: "twenty-one", "ninety-eight". This applies inside larger numbers too, as in "one hundred forty-three".

Hundred, thousand and beyond

Each group of three digits is read with its scale word: thousand, million, billion, trillion. "Hundred" never takes a plural — it stays "two hundred", not "two hundreds".

Decimals and cents

With a currency, the first two decimals are read as cents: "and fifty cents". Without a currency, decimals are read digit by digit after the word "point".

Cents vs pence

The decimal word changes with the currency. This table summarizes the common usage.

Frequently asked questions

Is the number to words converter free?
Yes, the number to words converter is 100% free with no usage limit. You can convert as many numbers as you need, of any size, without signing up or paying. Every conversion runs in your browser, so your data never leaves your device.
How do I write an amount in words on a check?
Type the figure in the field, choose the matching currency (dollar, euro or pound) and copy the result. Uppercase format works well for checks. The decimal part is expressed as "and X cents" or "and X pence".
Does it work with dollars, euros and pounds?
Yes. You can convert numbers to words with dollars, euros and pounds. The tool adjusts the plural ("one dollar", "two dollars") automatically and uses the correct decimal word — cents for dollars and euros, pence for pounds.
How are decimals and cents written?
If you choose a currency, the first two decimals are read as cents: 1,250.50 becomes "one thousand two hundred fifty and fifty cents". With no currency, decimals are read digit by digit after the word "point".
Can I convert numbers to words in Word or Excel?
Word does not convert numbers to words natively, and Excel needs macros or complex formulas. This online converter is far faster: paste the figure, pick a format and copy the text. You can then run it through the character counter if you have a limit.
Is there a digit limit?
The converter accepts whole numbers up to 36 digits. That range covers amounts far larger than typical checks, invoices and contracts while keeping the result readable.
How do I write numbers in uppercase for legal documents?
Select the UPPERCASE format before converting. Many legal and notarial documents require the amount in words and in uppercase to prevent tampering. For the opposite effect, try our case converter.
