01 · Why it matters

Why writing lempiras correctly matters

In Honduras, a badly written amount in words can block a check, trigger a SAR observation or void a contract clause. On checks, the amount in words prevails over the figure.

Three areas concentrate the risk:

  • Bank checks: figure and words must match. Whole amounts close with "EXACTOS".
  • SAR invoices: the amount must appear in figures and words; the client's RTN is required above a threshold.
  • Contracts & legal documents: the amount in words gives certainty to the economic clause.

This converter automates the three formats, applies RAE rules and uses the Honduran format (comma thousands, period decimal) with "EXACTOS" for whole amounts.

"LEMPIRAS EXACTOS" and the L 6,800.00 format

The Honduran check closes whole amounts with "EXACTOS" instead of "00/100". And, like all of Central America, it uses the US number format.

Check close · whole
… LEMPIRAS EXACTOS
instead of "con 00/100"
🇭🇳 Honduras · US format

🇪🇺 Europe · Colombia / Venezuela

50.000
1.234.567,89

Period thousands, comma decimal.

In practice: Check mode writes "EXACTOS" when the amount is whole and "con XX/100" when it has centavos. The figure is always shown in Honduran format.

03 · The banking detail

"exactos" or "con XX/100"

The close depends on whether the amount has centavos.

Whole amount
exactos

… LEMPIRAS EXACTOS

When there are no centavos, the Honduran check writes "EXACTOS".

With centavos
con XX/100

… LEMPIRAS CON 50/100

With centavos, it closes with the "con XX/100" fraction.

1 lempira = 100 centavos

⚖ The converter picks "EXACTOS" or "con XX/100" by the centavos automatically.

06 · Real errors

8 errors that get a check or invoice rejected

#01 Apocope

veintiuno lempiras

veintiún lempiras

The form "veintiún" uses apocope before a masculine noun. A bank will flag the long form when cashing.

Source: RAE Ortografía §10.2

#02 Masculine gender

doscientas lempiras

doscientos lempiras

Hundreds agree in gender with the noun. "Lempira" is masculine, so "doscientos", never "doscientas".

Source: RAE Ortografía §10.4

#03 Cien vs ciento

cien cincuenta lempiras

ciento cincuenta lempiras

"Cien" is used only for exactly 100. From 101 onward it must be "ciento" followed by the rest.

Source: RAE Ortografía §10.3

#04 Separation with "y"

treintaiún lempiras

treinta y un lempiras

From 31 onward tens and units are separated by "y". Joining them is incorrect.

Source: RAE Ortografía §10.2

#05 Mil without article

un mil lempiras

mil lempiras

"Mil" never takes the article "un" before it. Only "millón" does.

Source: RAE Ortografía §10.5

#06 Million with "de"

uno millón lempiras

un millón de lempiras

"Uno" must apocopate to "un", and "millón" requires the preposition "de" when followed by a noun.

Source: RAE Ortografía §10.5

#07 European format

L 6.800,00

L 6,800.00

Honduras uses the US format: comma for thousands and period for decimals. The European format confuses banks.

#08 Missing "EXACTOS"

SEIS MIL OCHOCIENTOS LEMPIRAS

SEIS MIL OCHOCIENTOS LEMPIRAS EXACTOS

On Honduran checks, amounts without centavos close with "EXACTOS" instead of "00/100". It is the local banking convention.

07 · RAE rules + Honduran use

Rules for writing lempira amounts

01 Apocope before masculine noun

"Uno" and "veintiuno" shorten to "un" and "veintiún" before "lempiras".

un lempira · veintiún lempiras · cuarenta y un lempiras
uno lempira · veintiuno lempiras · cuarenta y uno lempiras

RAE Ortografía 2010, §10.2

02 Gender agreement

"Lempira" is masculine. Hundreds agree: "doscientos lempiras", never "doscientas".

doscientos lempiras · trescientos lempiras · novecientos lempiras
doscientas lempiras · trescientas lempiras

RAE Ortografía 2010, §10.4

03 Cien vs ciento

"Cien" = exactly 100 or multiplier ("cien mil", "cien millones"). From 101 to 199: "ciento".

cien lempiras · cien mil lempiras · ciento cincuenta lempiras
cien cincuenta lempiras

RAE Ortografía 2010, §10.3

04 Conjunction "y" between tens and units

"Y" appears between tens and units from 31 upward. Never between hundreds and the rest.

treinta y un lempiras · ciento cinco lempiras
treintaiún lempiras · ciento y cinco lempiras

RAE Ortografía 2010, §10.2

05 Thousands separator: the comma (US format)

In Honduras the comma separates thousands and the period marks centavos: "L 6,800.00". US format, like the rest of Central America.
