Why writing lempiras correctly matters
In Honduras, a badly written amount in words can block a check, trigger a SAR observation or void a contract clause. On checks, the amount in words prevails over the figure.
Three areas concentrate the risk:
- Bank checks: figure and words must match. Whole amounts close with "EXACTOS".
- SAR invoices: the amount must appear in figures and words; the client's RTN is required above a threshold.
- Contracts & legal documents: the amount in words gives certainty to the economic clause.
This converter automates the three formats, applies RAE rules and uses the Honduran format (comma thousands, period decimal) with "EXACTOS" for whole amounts.
"LEMPIRAS EXACTOS" and the L 6,800.00 format
The Honduran check closes whole amounts with "EXACTOS" instead of "00/100". And, like all of Central America, it uses the US number format.
Comma thousands, period decimal.
Period thousands, comma decimal.
In practice: Check mode writes "EXACTOS" when the amount is whole and "con XX/100" when it has centavos. The figure is always shown in Honduran format.
"exactos" or "con XX/100"
The close depends on whether the amount has centavos.
… LEMPIRAS EXACTOS
When there are no centavos, the Honduran check writes "EXACTOS".
HN banking practice… LEMPIRAS CON 50/100
With centavos, it closes with the "con XX/100" fraction.
1 lempira = 100 centavos⚖ The converter picks "EXACTOS" or "con XX/100" by the centavos automatically.

❌veintiuno lempiras
✅veintiún lempiras
The form "veintiún" uses apocope before a masculine noun. A bank will flag the long form when cashing.

❌doscientas lempiras
✅doscientos lempiras
Hundreds agree in gender with the noun. "Lempira" is masculine, so "doscientos", never "doscientas".

❌cien cincuenta lempiras
✅ciento cincuenta lempiras
"Cien" is used only for exactly 100. From 101 onward it must be "ciento" followed by the rest.

❌treintaiún lempiras
✅treinta y un lempiras
From 31 onward tens and units are separated by "y". Joining them is incorrect.

❌un mil lempiras
✅mil lempiras
"Mil" never takes the article "un" before it. Only "millón" does.

❌uno millón lempiras
✅un millón de lempiras
"Uno" must apocopate to "un", and "millón" requires the preposition "de" when followed by a noun.

❌L 6.800,00
✅L 6,800.00
Honduras uses the US format: comma for thousands and period for decimals. The European format confuses banks.
