How many pages is 10,000 words?

Master's dissertation length in most programmes. The page count in every format, and how to carry a project this size.

Quick answer

Ten thousand words fills 20 pages single-spaced, 30 pages at 1.5 spacing and 40 pages double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman with 1-inch margins.

What writing 10,000 words actually means

Ten thousand words is where a piece of writing becomes a project with a schedule. It is a common length for a master's dissertation and for the longer kind of undergraduate capstone. Forty double-spaced pages: a document with a contents page, chapters, and usually a supervisor attached to it.

The vocabulary is worth getting straight, because it flips between countries. In the United States a thesis is generally the master's document and a dissertation is the doctoral one; in the United Kingdom and much of the Commonwealth the two are commonly reversed, with dissertation used for taught-degree work and thesis reserved for the PhD. Neither usage is wrong, and no online word count is authoritative for your programme — the handbook is.

10,000 words by typeface

Ten thousand words is where this table becomes indispensable, because the spread across typefaces exceeds fourteen pages double-spaced. A regulation that says "between forty and sixty pages" without naming a font is offering a range so wide that it is not really a constraint — the same text can land at either end of it without a word changing.

Typeface Words per page Single 1.5 Double
Times New Roman 500 20 30 40
Arial 460 21.7 32.6 43.5
Calibri 475 21.1 31.6 42.1
Verdana 380 26.3 39.5 52.6
Garamond 520 19.2 28.8 38.5

The distance between the most compact and the widest font in this table is 14.1 pages double-spaced on identical text. That is why serious guidelines name the typeface: without it, a limit stated in pages does not mean very much.

What the point size does

Starting from forty pages, one extra point of type size adds three or four more. In a dissertation that is not a way of padding, it is the reason the handbook fixes font, size, spacing and margins as a set rather than individually — and the reason to read that page before writing the first chapter rather than during the final week.

Size Single-spaced Double-spaced
10 pt 13.9 27.8
11 pt 16.8 33.6
12 pt 20 40
13 pt 23.5 47.1
14 pt 27.4 54.8

What gets written in 10,000 words

Master's dissertation

Ten to fifteen thousand words is a common band for taught master's programmes, though it varies widely by discipline.

Undergraduate capstone

The longer form of final-year project, where a department wants sustained independent work.

Monograph or extended study

A complete study of one narrowly defined question, self-contained and referenced throughout.

Novelette or short novella

The SFWA categories put the novelette at 7,500 to 17,500 words and the novella above that, so 10,000 sits squarely in novelette territory.

Full technical report

With appendices, drawings and costings, as produced on engineering and architecture projects.

Research report

The complete write-up of a field study: method, instruments, data and discussion.

How long 10,000 words takes to read

Forty-five minutes at an average pace. No examiner spends that time reading a dissertation linearly: they navigate by the contents page, the abstract and the conclusion, then go deep wherever something looks unresolved. Those three pieces repay careful writing far more than chapter four does.

How to carry a 10,000-word project

Work in chapters, not in pages

Thinking "I am twenty pages short" is paralysing; thinking "I still owe the methodology chapter, about 1,500 words" is not. Breaking the target into five or six manageable units is most of the difference between making progress and stalling.

References and appendices usually sit outside the count

Most regulations count the body of the work and exclude the title page, contents, bibliography and appendices. A 10,000-word dissertation is routinely submitted as sixty or seventy physical pages, and that is normal rather than a sign of padding.

Keep dated versions

A document that grows over months changes shape several times. Keeping dated copies lets you recover a paragraph you cut in March and need in May. It is the dullest advice on this list and the one that prevents the most misery.

The final revision needs days, not an evening

Forty pages proofread the night before submission are proofread badly. Reserving the last week for revision only — with no new writing scheduled in it — is what separates a clean submission from one with a typo in the abstract, which is the page the examiner reads first.

One last note on layout: at this size it is worth building the document in your department's template from the beginning, if one exists. Reformatting forty pages at the end — footnotes, figure numbering, an automatic contents page and a bibliography style all at once — takes far longer than it looks, and the week before submission is a terrible moment to discover the regulations wanted a different font.

Other lengths

Every figure has its own page, with its own table and its own list of typical documents. If yours is not here, the words to pages calculator takes any number and any format.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages is 10,000 words double-spaced?
Forty pages in 12-point Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. In Arial at the same size it passes forty-three, and in Verdana it exceeds fifty-two. When a regulation states the limit in pages rather than words, the required typeface is the first thing to look up.
Is 10,000 words normal for a dissertation?
It sits inside the usual band, which commonly runs from around 8,000 to 15,000 words for taught-degree work, but there is no national standard and disciplines differ sharply. Your programme handbook is the only reference that counts, and it is worth reading before you plan the project rather than halfway through it.
How long does it take to read 10,000 words?
About forty-five minutes at the average 220 words per minute, and a little over an hour at a slower pace. An examiner will not read it that way: they navigate by contents, abstract and conclusion and read closely only where they have questions. Writing with that pattern in mind noticeably improves the result.
How long does it take to write a 10,000-word dissertation?
Typing the text is roughly four hours. The actual work — choosing the question, reading the literature, designing the method, drafting, working through supervisor feedback and revising — is measured in months. Programmes typically allocate the dissertation a credit weighting that corresponds to a few hundred hours of student effort.
