How many pages is 500 words?
One page single-spaced, two double-spaced — and the reason so many applications stop you right about here.
Quick answer
Five hundred words fill 1 page single-spaced, 1.5 pages at 1.5 spacing and 2 pages double-spaced, set in 12-point Times New Roman with 1-inch margins.

What writing 500 words actually means
Five hundred words is the smallest length that still reads as a finished piece rather than a note. It is roughly one side of paper single-spaced and a little over two minutes of reading — short enough that almost nobody abandons it halfway, which is exactly why cover letters, opinion columns and press releases cluster here.
It is also a deceptively hard length. Five hundred words is about twenty-five ordinary sentences, and twenty-five sentences do not hold an opening, three supporting arguments and a developed conclusion. They hold one idea explained properly, or three ideas explained badly. Most drafts that feel cramped at this length are not too short; they are trying to cover too much ground.
500 words by typeface
At this length the typeface barely matters. The gap between the widest and the narrowest font in the table is under one page double-spaced, so any reasonable combination lands on one or two sides. Five hundred words is the one length where you can stop worrying about formatting and spend the attention on the sentences instead.
| Typeface | Words per page | Single | 1.5 | Double |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Times New Roman | 500 | 1 | 1.5 | 2 |
| Arial | 460 | 1.1 | 1.6 | 2.2 |
| Calibri | 475 | 1.1 | 1.6 | 2.1 |
| Verdana | 380 | 1.3 | 2 | 2.6 |
| Garamond | 520 | 1 | 1.4 | 1.9 |
The distance between the most compact and the widest font in this table is 0.7 pages double-spaced on identical text. That is why serious guidelines name the typeface: without it, a limit stated in pages does not mean very much.
What the point size does
The classic move at this length is not padding but the reverse: dropping to 11 point to keep a cover letter on a single page. It works, and it is usually a bad trade — a page of dense 11-point text reads as harder work than a page of 12-point with a paragraph cut out of it. If the page is overflowing, the fix is in the draft, not in the point size.
| Size | Single-spaced | Double-spaced |
|---|---|---|
| 10 pt | 0.7 | 1.4 |
| 11 pt | 0.8 | 1.7 |
| 12 pt | 1 | 2 |
| 13 pt | 1.2 | 2.4 |
| 14 pt | 1.4 | 2.7 |
What gets written in 500 words
Cover letter
Three or four short paragraphs. Recruiters read these in under a minute, so anything past one page is rarely read at all.
Op-ed or opinion column
Most opinion desks work in the 600-to-800 range; 500 is the tight end, and the one editors trim toward.
Supplemental application essay
The Common App personal statement caps at 650 words, so supplements and "why us" answers often land near 500.
Press release
The convention is one page, on the theory that a journalist should be able to read the whole thing without scrolling.
Short blog post or update
An announcement, a changelog note, or a direct answer to one narrow question.
Executive summary
The front page of a long report, written so that someone who reads nothing else still knows what was decided.
How long 500 words takes to read
A little over two minutes. That is roughly the window a hiring manager or an editor gives an unsolicited document before deciding whether to keep going, and it is the practical argument for this length: 500 words fit entirely inside the reader's first decision, so nothing important gets stranded on a page they never reach.
3 handwritten sides, counting 200 words per side. That is the length a teacher means by "two or three sides", which is still how school assignments are set in most of the UK and Ireland.
How to hit 500 words without padding
Draft 700 and cut back
Writing to the number from the first sentence produces cautious, hedged prose. Overwrite by about forty per cent and then cut: what survives the trim is usually the part that mattered, and the cutting is faster than the agonising.
Pick one story, not a résumé in prose
The most common failure in a 500-word cover letter is trying to narrate an entire career. One episode told concretely — what the situation was, what you did, what changed — persuades more than six achievements listed without evidence for any of them.
Delete the throat-clearing
"It is worth noting that", "in today's fast-paced world", "I am writing to express my interest in" — each of those costs six to ten words and carries no information. In a 500-word piece, cutting three of them buys you a whole extra example.
Treat the limit as a limit
When a brief specifies 500 words it is almost never a suggestion, and application portals frequently truncate silently at the cap rather than warning you. If your text is going into a form field, paste it in and check what actually saved.
One practical warning if you are submitting through a web form rather than attaching a document: check the character limit as well as the word limit. Five hundred words of English runs to roughly 2,800–3,000 characters with spaces, and plenty of forms cut off at 2,000 without saying so.
